Carlo Ancelotti accused of tax fraud in Spain
He is the latest in a string of high-profile football stars to face jail time in Spain for defrauding the tax man
Prosecutors in Spain have accused Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti of failing to declare earnings worth 1 million euros to the tax office, and are calling for him to be jailed for four years and nine months.
In a statement this Wednesday March 6, prosecutors said that they are bringing two accounts of tax fraud against 64-year-old Italian Ancelotti, who coached the Madrid side between 2013 and 2015, and then again after rejoining the club in 2021.
Specifically, it is alleged that he deliberately failed to declare earnings from image rights in 2014 and 2015 by setting up a “confusing” system of shell companies to conceal his extra earnings.
It was back in July when a Spanish court ordered Ancelotti to stand trial over the supposed tax fraud, but no date has yet been set.
Ancelotti replied, saying, “It’s an old story that started eight years ago for a declaration in 2015 because the prosecutor’s office thinks I was a resident and I think I was not a resident. I have already paid the fine, the money is already in the prosecutor’s office and the lawyers are just talking to find a solution.”
He continued, “I am convinced that I am innocent because I was not a resident in 2015 and they think I was. Let’s see what the judge decides.”
Last year, pop star Shakira pleaded guilty to tax evasion in Spain and paid a fine of 1 million euros, while Spain continues to crack down on top football players and managers who are suspected of cheating the tax man.
Former Madrid coach Jose Mourinho received a one-year suspended sentence after reaching a guilty plea for tax fraud in 2019, while star players Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have also been found guilty of tax evasion in Spain.
