ARCHIVED - Cartagena beach bars agree to open in the mornings to avoid closure
The five chiringuitos were also accused of polluting the Mar Menor

Five Cartagena chiringuito beach bars have given in to pressure from the coastal authority Costas and agreed to open up in the mornings, as well as committing to fully clean the area of any rubbish and debris that could otherwise further pollute the Mar Menor.
The City Council, which acts as an intermediary between the Costas and the beach bars, will present both parties with a responsibility statement that details the agreement and avoids the closure of the chiringuitos.
Last week, the authorities threatened to shut down the bars, claiming they were in breach of their licences by not opening to beachgoers early in the day. For their part, the bar owners argued that with so few customers, it’s not worth their while bringing in staff and opening up in the morning.

In a letter sent to the bars, Costas also complained that the bars are polluting the Mar Menor: “The service is provided through the use of non-recyclable plastic cups that are blown by the wind into the Mar Menor along with cigarette butts and other polluting waste.”
The five bars, located between the Vivero and Mar de Cristal beaches, should now be able to hold onto their concessions this summer and for the next two years.
For this reason, one of the owners confirmed that, “even if it is not profitable for us to open in the mornings and we lose money, we will do it."
