Cartagena cracks down on dog poop with fines of up to €1,500
Officials in Cartagena are handing out bags and water bottles as part of a new push to keep the streets clean

Cartagena City Council has launched a new campaign aimed at tackling one of the city’s most common complaints, dog poop and urine left on streets and pavements.
The initiative, organised alongside municipal cleaning company Lhicarsa, is encouraging pet owners to be more responsible when walking their dogs in public areas. As part of the campaign, residents are being given disposable poo bags along with portable containers designed to be filled with soap and water to wash away urine.
Councillor for Social Policy Cristina Mora was out on Calle Carlos III on Tuesday May 12, handing out information leaflets and reminding residents about the rules already in place under the city’s municipal ordinance.
According to the council, failing to clean up dog excrement from public roads is considered a minor offence but can still lead to fines ranging from €100 to €1,500.
City officials explained that dog fouling and urine continue to cause problems across Cartagena, affecting hygiene, day-to-day coexistence between neighbours and the overall image of the city.
The campaign also includes a series of reminders for dog owners, including always carrying bags to collect waste and using bottles of water to dilute urine after pets relieve themselves outdoors.
Residents are also being asked to stop pets from urinating on building facades, doorways and children’s play areas.
The council pointed out that public spaces are shared by everyone and said responsible pet ownership plays an important role in keeping Cartagena cleaner and more pleasant for both residents and visitors.
