ARCHIVED - Castilla-La Mancha rescues blocked stock at Cartagena port
Three truck-loads of animal feed had to be escorted by police from the Murcia port because of the transport strike
The national transport strike is closing in on its thirteenth day and the industrial action has caused severe disruption in the Region of Murcia, with picketers blocking freight drivers coming to and from the Port of Cartagena.
This blockade at the Murcia port has already resulted in severe supply shortages across the region, and the strike has resulted in several petrol stations closing up shop temporarily because there isn’t enough fuel in the stores.
Last week, the Guardia Civil had to be called in to ensure that truckers who decided to keep working during the stoppage could safely come and go, and now the Spanish Confederation of Manufacturers of Compound Food for Animals (CESFAC) has stepped in, and together with the ministries of Agriculture of Castilla-La Mancha and Murcia, they have ensured that three convoys of livestock feed have been able to safely leave the Port.

There are currently as many as five trucks anchored in the Port of Cartagena with much-needed supplies of soy flour, wheat, potassium sulphate and cereals waiting to unload but because of the strike, there are no trucks available to carry the cargo to its destination.
Port traffic is being affected all throughout Spain, and the Minister for Agriculture, Martinez Arroyo, explained that the complicated manoeuvres at the Murcia docks are essential for the whole country.
"Among all of us we have organized a convoy, the third that we have done since this labour conflict with the carriers began," the minister explained, adding that the escorted caravan of trucks left at four in the morning "to guarantee feed for our farmers in the 5 provinces."
The large mobilisations of trucks will now guarantee "the feeding of the animals in Castilla-La Mancha", the minister concluded, before adding that normal production will surely suffer as a result of the lack of raw materials.
