ARCHIVED - Catalonia closes nightlife venues and implements curfew
The restrictions will begin on Christmas Eve and last 15 days
With Covid infections soaring throughout Spain, the regional government in Catalonia announced its intention to implement further restrictions to stem the spread of the virus, and if approved by the Superior Court of Justice, the measures will enter into force in the early hours of Friday morning, December 24.
The proposed restrictions include the closure of nightlife, capacity limitations in restaurants, shops, gyms, sports and cultural venues as well as the implementation of a curfew between 1am and 6am.
Social gatherings will also be limited to ten people and teleworking will be recommended where possible.
Bars and restaurants will be reduced to 50% inside but terraces remain at 100% capacity, while the other establishments will be subject to a 70% capacity limitation.
These measures will be in place for 15 days and will be reviewed once the term ends.
According to government spokesperson Patrícia Plaja, it is necessary, urgent and essential to reduce mobility and interaction between people who are not bubble groups”.
She added that although the Government is aware of the impact of these restrictions, “the experts are clear about it, if measures are not taken urgently, the impact of the pandemic will be much worse than all the economic, social or emotional impacts that we know these measures can generate”.
