ARCHIVED - Spain registers worst weekend since January: Covid update December 20
The cumulative incidence rate in Spain has jumped almost 100 points since Friday
It’s been a common theme both this month and last for coronavirus indicators to shoot up in Spain over the weekend, and the past couple of days have unfortunately been no exception. With the national cumulative incidence rate jumping up by almost 100 points just days before Christmas, many communities are implementing stricter safety measures and all of the regional leaders are set to hold a virtual meeting with President Sánchez on Wednesday to discuss a common approach to the sixth wave.
Cumulative incidence rate
This 14-day figure has been steadily climbing in recent weeks and according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Health on Monday December 20 the cumulative rate has increased to 609 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the maximum risk level of 500. This represents a hike of almost 100 points since Friday when the number stood at 511, breaking the 500-case barrier for the first time since the height of the summer.
The highest figures continue to be recorded in the Basque Country (1,123) and Navarra (1,393), but the majority of regions are now above 500, including the Valencian Community (668) and the Region of Murcia (651). There are already 14 communities, including the north African enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, that are above the highest risk indicator for Covid according to the Ministry’s new traffic light system.
In fact, only Extremadura (444), Andalucía (379) and Castilla-La Mancha (302) remain below 500 cases.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of health has reported 79,704 new infections on Monday, 9,993 of which were diagnosed in the last 24 hours, the highest number in a weekend since January, when 49,802 cases were recorded.
These figures are also much higher than those of the same day last week, when 49,802 cases were reported, and bring the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic in Spain to 5,535,231.
In the past two weeks alone, 289,156 positives have been registered.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 7,501 patients admitted to hospital (up from 6,667 on Friday) with 1,142 people being treated in the ICU (1,306 Friday).
The bed occupancy rate stands at 6.03% on average, and in the case of ICUs it has reached 15.49%, more than one point above the figure for Friday (14.03%), placing it at high risk.
Catalonia is the community with the highest ICU pressure at the moment, with an occupancy rate of 29.96%, although Aragon, the Basque Country and Valencia are also now above 20%. Madrid (14.31%) and Andalucía (6.51%) are still below average.
Fatalities
A further 85 fatalities have been reported over the weekend compared with 103 last Monday, bringing the overall death toll to 88,793.
In the last seven days, 196 people have died in Spain.
Vaccination data
As of December 20, a total of 37,791,863 people over the age of 12, representing 89.7% of the population have been double jabbed while 38,637,216 people, or 91.7% have received the first dose.
In addition, the booster vaccine has been administered to 10,507,992 people.
