The Plaza de los Marineros in El Rompido, in the municipality of Cartaya, has been covered with a colourful crochet sunshade made by 40 local women, as part of the ‘Sorority Cartayera, the network’ project.

Local women have handmade the 320 round pieces that make up the artisanal canopy that now hangs in the seaside village and the participants have expressed their pride and joy, as everyone who passes through El Rompido will want to visit the canopy.
A representative from the group of women stated that the project has helped them through the pandemic, allowing them to keep busy and to keep in contact with one another, the sense of solidarity created by the project enabling them to remain positive throughout the difficult period of confinement.

They are grateful for the municipal project and are hoping to take part in similar initiatives in the future.

The colourful and characterful project has made Cartaya and El Rompido into points of reference for the rest of the province of Huelva and is included in the ‘Que brille tu Cartaya’ campaign, which aims to beautify the coastal municipality; the colourful canopy has certainly achieved that aim and will lift the spirits of anyone who sees it and hopefully inspire more such projects in the future.
