Common items banned from hand luggage on flights to Spain
EasyJet, Ryanair, Jet2 and BA all have strict hand luggage policies on flights to Spain and other destinations
The summer is fast approaching and millions of people are planning their first foreign holiday in a couple of years, but with prices on the increase more and more travellers are opting for the cheaper alternative of only bringing carry-on luggage, rather than checking in a big suitcase.
It’s vital therefore to be well informed about the rules, and popular airlines like Ryanair, British Airways, Jet2 and easyJet all have strict rules about what you can and can’t bring in your hand luggage. It can be an expensive mistake to make; if prohibited items are found at the airport security check, they will be confiscated.
Liquids are among the items which cause the most problems and with TUI announcing that passengers now have to bring their own snacks on board short-haul flights, it’s important to remember that drinks, perfumes and liquid cosmetics must be under 100ml and be carried in a transparent, re-sealable plastic bag measuring no more than 20cm x 20cm. The total amount of liquid per passenger can’t exceed one litre.
Travellers from the UK and other non-EU countries are subject to further restrictions, and the Spanish government has reiterated that Britons are not permitted to bring meat or dairy products into Spain. This ban includes cakes containing cream and sweets that have been made with gelatine. In addition, any food items being taken to Spain must be sealed in their original packaging, with the exception of baby formula.
Items banned from hand luggage
- Acid
- Pool, snooker or billiard cues
- Construction tools including hammers, nails and screwdrivers
- Catapults and sling-shots
- Darts
- Any kind of explosives
- Gas cartridges and cartridge re-fills and lighter fuel – one disposable lighter is permitted per passenger and it should be placed in a transparent, re-sealable plastic bag
- Hypodermic syringes, unless the passenger can provide medical evidence
- Knives or scissors with blades longer than 6cm
- Mercury
- Paint
- Razor blades
- Sports bats e.g. baseball, cricket
- Toy or replica guns, whether they are metal or plastic
- Umbrellas, unless they are foldable
It’s worth noting that even if you are checking in a suitcase, many of the above items, and several others, are not allowed in hold luggage either. Also, the rules do vary depending on the airline and the destination of the flight, so it’s always advisable to check with your carrier before packing for the airport.
