Compensation of up to 180,000 euros for families of deceased in Murcia disco fire
Municipalities around the Region are doubling down on efforts to ensure their nightclubs’ fire safety documentation is up to date

The families of the 13 people who died in the fire at the Teatre and Fonda Milagros nightclubs in Murcia on Sunday October 1 are considering creating a platform to take those responsible to court and receive financial compensation.
Some of the relatives of the deceased have already announced that they will even demand that Murcia City Council take responsibility upon learning that the premises devoured by the flames apparently had a cease-and-desist order from 2022 which was never enforced.

While the nightclub owners contest this version of events, initial estimates based on the Civil Liability Law for those affected by traffic accidents suggest that the compensation due to the victims’ families from those deemed responsible if it is confirmed that the deaths were caused by negligence and reckless homicide could be up to 180,000 euros.

This amount could change depending on whether the claimant is a spouse, parent, sibling, child or other relative of the deceased. The highest amounts possible would be for spouses and children, especially if they are minors.
While the families search for closure, or at least compensation, the City Council has made psychological support available to the firefighters and personnel who were present on the day. The sessions, both group and individual, will take place this Thursday October 5 and Friday 6 in the morning and afternoon to attend to the psychological needs of those who may have been traumatised by what they saw and experienced.
In other cities in the Region of Murcia, authorities are scrambling to review the security of their own nightclubs, bars and leisure facilities.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, has announced that the Lorca City Council will create a specialist “multidisciplinary” unit to reinforce inspections of nightlife venues in both the urban area and the surrounding districts.
