ARCHIVED - Consulate condemns vicious attack on a Ukrainian by three Russians in Torrevieja
The Ukrainian Consulate in Valencia has called for greater protection against "hate crimes"
The Ukrainian Consulate in Valencia has condemned a brutal attack on a Ukrainian man by three Russians in Torrevieja last week, and is calling for "greater protection" and "prosecution of hate crimes".
The victim was reportedly set upon by three men in a bar in Torrevieja on Wednesday April 13, who violently punched and kicked him until he was semi-conscious.
The vicious assualt was capured on local security cameras, and there are reports the Ukrainian was working behind the bar at the time.
In a statement forwarded to the Guardai Civil on Friday April 15, the Ukrainian Consulate in the Valencia region wrote: "The peaceful coexistence of the growing Ukrainian community has recently been demonstrated and the authorities' concern for the safety of the Russian community shown to be totally unfounded. However, these are not the first assaults by Russian citizens on Ukrainians, death threats on social networks against Ukrainian associations and slashed tyres."
For this reason, the Consulate, which has held demonstrations in Valencia calling for peace in Ukraine (pictured), has asked the Government Delegation in the region for "greater protection and reinforcement in the prosecution of hate crimes".
"We also ask that, in convictions for hate crimes, article 89 of the Penal Code, which provides for the expulsion of a foreign citizen from Spanish territory when the sentence imposed is more than one year, be executed as quickly as possible.
"It is time to send a clear message to all those foreign residents who support dictatorships, attack minorities and violate fundamental rights and yet enjoy a residence in a democratic country like Spain," added the Consulate.
