Cool start to the week before the temperatures pick up: Spain weather June 19-22
The thermometers will spike to 40ºC in parts of southern Spain later in the week
After a scorching few days an Atlantic low swept across Spain on Sunday June 18 and brought abundant rain to most of the country, while the mercury dipped by as much as 6 or 8ºC in the southeast compared to Saturday.
The instability will continue at the beginning of the week, with more showers and stormy episodes very likely inland and in northern and eastern Spain. The thermometers will drop pretty much everywhere, resulting in temperatures that may even be a few degrees lower than normal for this time of year, although the early mornings should continue to be warm, according to the experts at the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
This will all change mid-week, however, when the rainfall will gradually decrease, leaving just a few heavy showers in Cantabria and mountainous areas of the north. The mercury will also begin to climb back up and by the weekend, and large parts of the west will easily hit 35ºC.
"This expected thermal rise during the second half of the week could be quite significant and it cannot be ruled out that on this occasion it will trigger temperatures to atypical values, so it will have to be followed carefully," explained Meteored forecaster Victor Gonzalez. "Even if the most extreme scenarios were not met, it is very likely that 40ºC could be exceeded in large areas of the southern half and 35ºC would also gain ground in the northern half."
It’s a largely cloudy start to the week in northern Spain and the southeastern provinces, where scattered showers and the occasional storm could make an appearance from the early hours of Monday June 19. Here they will subside during the afternoon while gaining strength in the rest of the country, although the Mediterranean coast and the extreme southwest should avoid most of the rain.
The Mediterranean, along with the Balearic Islands, will also enjoy the hottest temperatures on Monday, with parts of Andalucia soaring into the mid-30s.
Yellow weather alert for heavy rain and storms: Aragon, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y Leon, Galicia, Navarra, Basque Country and La Rioja.
Yellow weather alert for high temperatures: Balearic Islands.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Monday
Alicante: 21ºC; 34ºC
Málaga: 23ºC; 29ºC
Murcia: 20ºC; 36ºC
The unstable weather will continue in northern and inland areas of eastern Spain on Tuesday June 20, where scattered showers and storms are expected from early on. The southeast could also be hit with rain in the morning but this will ease from noon. The southwest, Mediterranean and Balearic Islands will be mostly clear once again with no chance of rain.
The temperatures will continue to fall across the board with the exception of eastern Spain and the Balearics, where the mercury could reach 35ºC.
Yellow weather alert for heavy rain and storms: Aragon, Navarra, Basque Country.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Tuesday
Alicante: 22ºC; 30ºC
Málaga: 21ºC; 29ºC
Murcia: 20ºC; 36ºC
Very little change is expected on Wednesday June 21 with scattered showers a possibility in most of the country expect for southwestern Spain, the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands, which will enjoy a mostly bright day with few clouds.
Daytime temperatures will dip in the northeast but rise elsewhere, and the nighttime temperatures will also climb in the Mediterranean.
Yellow weather alert for heavy rain and storms: Aragon.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Wednesday
Alicante: 22ºC; 30ºC
Málaga: 22ºC; 31ºC

The summery weather will reappear on Thursday June 22, when an anticyclone will prevail over most of the country. However, the early morning will still be damp and overcast in eastern Cantabria and around the Pyrenees. Everywhere else though will enjoy a mostly clear and sunny day as the temperatures start to climb, most notably in Cádiz and the Guadalquivir valley, where the thermometers will tip the scales at 40ºC.
