Costa Blanca man jailed for raping Irish student
The young woman was in Alicante on Erasmus when she was attacked
A 33-year-old man has been sentenced to four years in prison for raping a young Irish student who was on Erasmus in Alicante. The perpetrator, whose name has not been released, was also convicted of growing marijuana for sale and faces an additional year in prison and a fine of 4,504 euros for this offense.
According to court documents, the assault took place on June 17, 2022, when the man met the victim, who was walking alone, and offered to take her on a tour of the city on his motorcycle. He then took her to his apartment, where the assault occurred.
The victim immediately reported the attack to the police, who arrested the suspect and searched his home.
During the search, officers discovered a secret marijuana grow operation hidden in a closet, containing 48 plants and a large quantity of the drug worth 4,504 euros on the black market. The court ruled that the drugs were intended for sale to others.
The court gave credibility to the victim's testimony, stating that she had been consistent in her story and had no motive to lie.
In addition to the prison sentences, the defendant mustn’t go within 500 metres of his victim for two years, and he will be forced to serve five years of supervised probation. The defendant must also pay the victim 5,000 euros in compensation.
The sentence can be appealed to the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV) within a specified time frame.
