ARCHIVED - Couple arrested for robbing blind lottery vender at knifepoint in Alicante
The pair targeted a number of disabled lottery ticket sellers on the Costa Blanca
A couple in their 50s have been been arrested for allegedly stealing more than 2,000 euros worth of Spanish daily and weekly lottery tickets from a blind vender at knifepoint in Alicante.
The man was reportedly approached in a city centre street by a woman who put a knife to his chest and demanded he hand over his backpack, which contained tickets worth 2,300 euros.
The victim is one of several disabled lottery ticket sellers targeted in Alicante, according to National Police, who detained a man, aged 51, and a 52-year-old woman during a late night patrol to prevent street crime on Wednesday night, November 24.
Officers were aware of a number of thefts of lottery tickets and had been given detailed descriptions of the suspects, when they noticed a group of people, two of whom appeared to have several coupons.
They were identified as the Spanish man and woman police wanted to talk to in connection with the street robberies, and the pair were searched and found to be carrying 40 lottery tickets for draws which had not yet been held, worth more than 200 euros.
The detainees were placed at the disposal of Alicante Examining Magistrate's Court.
The arrests are part of the National Police's Safe Commerce Plan activated ahead of Christmas to "ensure safety whilst shopping and prevent criminal acts against traders and customers".
