Covid cases surge in Spain in the lead-up to Christmas
Coronavirus and its symptoms continue to evolve in Spain: these are the signs you should watch out for
Spain is heading towards its third Christmas with coronavirus rampant among the population and as the cold weather sets in, Covid cases are also on the rise. After a brief reprieve during the warmer summer months, the virus tends to resurface around this time. In fact, in recent weeks, all types of acute respiratory illnesses have made a come-back.
The Ministry of Health in Spain is keeping a close eye on the situation, and its experts were startled to discover that in the last fortnight, Covid cases have more than doubled, going from 8.9% to a 15.2% positivity rate.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic, the SARS-CoV-2 virus has continued to evolve and mutate, as have the symptoms associated with the disease. Today, the authorities are mainly concerned with two variants: XBB.1.5-like + F456L, which today is responsible for 42.59% of all cases, and BA.2.86, which is present in 44.44% of all Covid-positives.
Both of these strains are subvariants of Omicron, and they have developed in such a way as to fool the immune system, bypassing many of the vaccines and spreading more readily from human to human. If there is an upside, it’s that both mutations present with similar symptoms, making them easier to spot.
In general, according to the American Medical Association (AMA), symptoms can range from those typical of a cold, such as cough and congestion, to difficulty breathing and low oxygen levels that require urgent medical attention.
In addition to these tell-tale signs, others have emerged that “may appear different” to previous coronavirus strains like Alpha and Delta.
“In some cases, symptoms such as temporary loss of taste and smell may still appear, but it has become less common with the Omicron variant and subvariants,” the AMA points out.
These symptoms, which last between five and seven days, or even longer, include: fever, chills, fatigue, muscle pain, sore throat, nausea or vomiting and diarrhoea.
