ARCHIVED - Covid decline begins to slow: Spain update March 10
The incidence rate has only dropped by 56 points in a week in Spain
The pandemic data released by the Ministry of Health on Wednesday March 9 shows that the health situation is continuing to improve, albeit at a more modest rate that a few weeks ago. The cumulative incidence rate is now falling at a rate of about 8 points per day nationally, a steady if slow move in the right direction.
The improving data has prompted the health authorities to convene an important meeting in Zaragoza on Thursday with all the regional leaders to iron out the details of a Covid de-escalation plan, which will greatly reduce the remaining restrictions and overall monitoring of the virus. Although not officially on the table, Madrid is expected to bring up the issue of indoor masks in a bid to get the measure scrapped altogether.
Although President Sánchez has indicated that masks will be abolished “soon”, many regions have railed against the notion, preferring to wait for technical and scientific data before making a firm decision on removing one of Spain’s last safety tools.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health has registered 21,936 new coronavirus infections on Wednesday March 9. These figures are slightly higher than those of the same day last week, when 18,803 positives were reported, and bring the total number of infections since the health crisis began to 11,181,510.
Cumulative incidence rate
The incidence rate continues its conservative increase and has fallen five points in the last 24 hours to 430 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
All of the autonomous have by now managed to bring their incidence below the 1,000-mark, with Melilla leading the field out of the pandemic with just 214 cases, followed by Castilla-La Mancha (220) and Andalucía (251).
The Valencian Community has made great headway in recent days, dropping well below the national average to 345 cases per 100,000 while the Region of Murcia is sitting somewhere in the middle of the pack in the 500-case range after registering a consistent decline all week.
At the other extreme is the Canary Islands, with the highest rate in Spain of 872 cases, followed by Extremadura (689).
Hospitalisations and fatalities
Hospital data has also improved in the last 24 hours: there are currently 5,061 patients hospitalised for Covid (down from 5,294 on Tuesday) while 743 people are being treated for more serious conditions in Spain’s ICIs (down from 773).
In the past day, there have been 517 admissions and 753 discharges.
All of these figures mean that the percentage of beds occupied by coronavirus-positive patients is steadily declining. General hospital occupancy fell from 4.26% to 4.08% on Wednesday while the number of intensive care places taken up by Covid patients has dropped from 8.46% to 8.15%.
Catalonia, with a 15.9% occupancy, is the community with the highest number of critical patients in the ICU but is right on the cusp of the high-risk category (less than 15%).
Aragón (13.1%) and the Basque Country (12.3%) follow in the highest rate of patients in the ICU.
In this Wednesday’s report, 133 new deaths have been added, a huge decrease on the 627 fatalities reported on the same day last week.
To date, 100,992 people in Spain have lost their lives to Covid.
Vaccination data
No updated vaccination figures have been released today, but as of March 8, a total of 38,443,970 people over the age of 12, representing 91.1% of the population, have been double jabbed, while 92.9% (39,189,566 people) have received their first vaccine.
