ARCHIVED - Covid incidence rate in Spain continues to fall with 16,353 new infections and 77 deaths over the weekend
Spain’s coronavirus rates continue to fall with the authorities reporting a 14-day accumulated figure of 223.75 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Monday, May 3.
The Ministry of Health reported a total of 16,353 new cases and 77 deaths due to Covid on Saturday and Sunday, with most new cases during the last week being reported in Madrid (25,017), Catalonia (23,212), Andalusia (17,955) and the Basque Country (11,034).
The figures show a downward trend in Spain’s infection rates, dropping from the 229.20 cases per 100,000 inhabitants reported on Friday. They are also a decrease from the 19,852 new cases and 147 deaths reported the previous week on Monday, April 26.
The Ministry of Health’s figures showed that eight regions are currently at the ‘extreme risk’ level, however, with the Basque Country leading the way with 496.1 cases per 100,000 people, followed by Madrid at 368.00, Melilla at 347.97, Navarra at 332.28, Catalonia at 298.34, Aragon at 297.13, La Rioja at 286.64, and Cantabria at 254.42.
Meanwhile the Valencian Community is the only region at the ‘very low risk’ level, at fewer than 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants; this in turn, is causing concern amongst regions with the lower rates who are naturally worried that the end of the state of emergency on May 9 will increase the risk of those with coronavirus travelling to their regions.
Across Spain, there are now 9,747 people hospitalised with the virus, of whom 2,323 are in the ICU. The figures represent a slight increase compared to Friday, when the numbers were 9,668 in hospital and 2,303 in ICU.
The latest figures bring Spain’s accumulated infections numbers since the beginning of the pandemic to 3,540,430 cases and 78,293 deaths.
Spain’s Ministry of Health also announced yesterday that it has now vaccinated more than 5 million people with both doses, representing 10.7 per cent of the country, while 25.6 per cent of people (12,162,359) people have received at least one vaccine.
