ARCHIVED - Covid infections in Spain reached their maximum peak in the first two weeks of July
Overall, the seventh wave has had more impact than the emergence of the Omicron variant in Spain

As part of its new surveillance system at the end of the sixth wave of the coronavirus pandemic, the Ministry of Health stopped publishing data on the entire Spanish population and instead focused on those over the age of 60.
Since the beginning of March, figures on infections, hospitalisations and deaths in older people have been released twice-weekly and the latest report suggests that the grip of the seventh wave is loosening, with the cumulative incidence rate dropping 140 points in a week to stand at 1,081 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
However, a study by the Complutense University Observatory, which constantly monitors the evolution of the pandemic, paints a different picture entirely.
According to the experts, if all the data is considered, Spain actually reached the maximum peak of the health crisis in the first two weeks of July, when the average incidence reached an incredible 5,400 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
In this scenario, the seventh wave has already far exceeded the impact experienced when the Omicron variant exploded across Spain.
After the Christmas holidays, with Omicron on the rise, the recorded peak was 4,600, the highest up to that date.
This is in stark contrast to the data released by the Ministry on March 2 when the new system was put in place to only represent over 60s, when the published cumulative incidence rate was just 486 cases.
The 'Anticipa-Covid 19 Emerging Infections' Observatory in the Complutense University is a research project funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the aim of the project is to provide Covid data in real time.
