ARCHIVED - ICU admissions increase 9 per cent: Spain Covid update July 20
All of the other data suggests that the seventh wave may be weakening throughout Spain
The seventh wave of the coronavirus pandemic is continuing to decline, although hospital and intensive care admissions are swinging back and forth. While health experts have long been advising that the Omicron variant doesn’t result in such serious illnesses as the previous strains, the epidemiological data suggests otherwise, as ICU occupancy rates have risen by more than 9% in recent days.
According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health in Spain, the average incidence of coronavirus in older populations has continued its steady decline over the past week. However, it’s worth noting that the health report published this Tuesday July 19 only includes figures from Friday to Sunday, so may not paint the whole picture.
Cumulative incidence rate
In any case, the 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 has fallen 140 points since the last update to stand at 1,081 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 1,451 cases, followed by septuagenarians (1,058), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (762).
The 7-day incidence also continues to decline, going from 477 cases to 391, which indicates that the number of infections should continue to drop in the coming days.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
The incidence began to fall last Tuesday for the first time since June 10 and this caused a natural drop in hospitalisations. In fact, hospital occupancy rates dipped below the 10% threshold, taking the health services from high-risk to medium.
However, the number of patients remains high and is still almost double that of last month, with 11,579 in total hospitalised. Of these, 547 patients are in a critical condition in Spain’s ICUs, bumping the occupancy up from 5.8% to 6.3%.
Since the last report, only Andalucia, the Balearic Islands, Ceuta, Madrid and the Region of Murcia have registered decreases in intensive care.
The autonomous communities have registered 382 Covid-related fatalities in the last 7 days, bringing the total since the start of the pandemic to 109,642, while the mortality rate from Covid in people aged 60 years and under has fallen to 3.7% (it was 4.7% just over three months ago).
Coronavirus infections
41,683 new infections have been reported by the communities throughout Spain over the weekend, 23,226 of which were diagnosed in people over 60.
The data show a definite slowdown in the number of infections in this group, however, which exceeded 40,000 cases in each previous health report at the height of the seventh wave.
Vaccination data
As of Wednesday July 20, a total of 39,120,199 people, representing 92.7% of the population over the age of 12, are now double jabbed. In addition, 39,247,920 people, or 93%, have received at least one dose.
