ARCHIVED - Covid continues to beat a retreat: Spain pandemic update August 24
The 14-day incidence rate in Spain has fallen another 20 points and hospital admissions drop further
Spain’s Minister of Health this week celebrated the fact that “there is a lot of light” at the end of the tunnel as the country appears to be beating the coronavirus pandemic into submission. The incidence rate has taken another dip and is well below 200 cases while hospital and intensive care admissions continue to steadily decline.
Even with this positive data, the health experts have agreed to maintain mandatory masks for the foreseeable future on public transport, in pharmacies and hospitals as well as in nursing homes, particularly with the flu season fast approaching.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health registered 9,020 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday August 23, of which 5,332 were diagnosed in people over the age of 60. This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,323,784.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 has fallen almost 20 points since the last report to stand at 176.52 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the 195.17 cases registered on Friday.
Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 274.76 cases, followed by septuagenarians (182.20), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (121.17). The incidence rate in all of these age groups has steadily declined in recent days.
In the past two weeks, a total of 21,744 positives have been registered in this age group.
The 7-day incidence also continues to decline, going from 74 cases to 71, which indicates that the number of infections should continue to drop in the coming days.
Aragón has beaten Andalucia off the top spot, registering the lowest incidence rate in Spain this week, with just 83.99 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Every region has now dropped well below the 500-case threshold.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 4,063 patients admitted to hospitals throughout Spain (down from 4,542 on Friday) while 271 people are being treated for more serious conditions in the country’s ICUs (compared to 303 before the weekend).
These figures mean that 3.53% of all hospital beds are occupied by Covid-positive patients (down from 3.89%) while intensive care occupancy has fallen from 3.6% to 3.24%.
A further 118 Covid-related fatalities were reported in Tuesday’s update, bringing the overall death toll in Spain to 112,246 people.
Vaccination data
As of August 24, 92.8% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,141,036 people have now received two doses.
So far, 39,256,032 have received at least one dose, 93.1% of the population over 12 years of age.
