ARCHIVED - Critical patient numbers drop by 24 per cent: Spain Covid update September 14
ICU admissions have only increased slightly in four regions of Spain in the last week
The expected shipment of Moderna and Pfizer coronavirus vaccines has arrived in Spain, meaning the country is ready to kick off a new campaign to roll out fourth doses. The drive will begin on September 26, right on schedule, and will initially focus on people over the age of 80 and those living in care homes, before gradually moving down through the age groups.
If all goes to plan, the Ministry of Health anticipates that both the residents and staff of health care centres should all have received their second booster jab by October 10.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health registered 6,469 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday September 13, of which 4,072 were diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,374,116.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 has dipped to 130.17 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, which represents a good decrease compared to the 137.39 reported on Friday.
The 7-day incidence in citizens aged 60 or over has also reflects this slow-down, dropping from 61.45 cases to 58.23.
Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 194.88 cases, followed by septuagenarians (141.44), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (88.28). All of these age groups have experienced a decline over the weekend.
There has been steady progress in reducing the incidence rate in the last wee: the autonomous city of Ceuta maintains the best figure, plummeting from 52.71 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to just 26.36. It is followed by Melilla, with 63.08 cases and Navarra (64.11).
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 2,602 patients admitted to hospitals throughout Spain compared to 2,889 in the last report, while 169 people are being treated for more serious conditions in the country’s ICUs (a considerable drop from 224).
These data mean that 2.22% of all hospital beds are occupied by Covid patients (down from 2.52% on the same day last week) while the occupancy rate in intensive care has fallen to just 1.98%.
In the last week, the number of people in critical conditions in intensive care has dropped by 24.5% across Spain, with only Andalucia, the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha and Castilla y Leon registering a slight upturn.
A further 149 Covid-related fatalities were reported in Friday’s update, bringing the overall death toll in Spain to 113,279 people.
Vaccination data
As of September 14, 92.8% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,147,403 people have now received two doses.
So far, 39,260,488 have received at least one dose, 93.1% of the population over 12 years of age.
