ARCHIVED - Cyprus detects new Deltacron variant
Deltacron is a mixture of both the Delta and Omicron Covid strains
Cypriot authorities have confirmed the detection of 25 cases of Delta and Omicron co-infections, a new coronavirus strain which the country has dubbed ‘Deltacron’. According to Leondios Kostrikis, professor of Biology at the University of Cyprus, the novel Covid strain has the genetic signature of Omicron and the genomes of Delta.
Of the 25 cases reported in Cyprus, the vast majority have been detected in previously hospitalised patients.
For now, the experts believe that this new variant will be overshadowed by the existing Omicron strain, as is still appears to be more infectious. However, scientists have warned that the number of confirmed positives is still far too low to accurately predict the impact of Deltacron.
“No one can and should not yet say anything about Deltacron. [There are] very few cases in Cyprus, and their relevance is not known”, Dr. Óscar Cingolani, an expert at Johns Hopkins University (USA), cautioned on social media.
