The Region of Murcia has been reporting a downward trend in Covid figures this week and the latest update shows the lowest number of daily cases for a weekday since last year, with 3,391 cases registered on Thursday January 27.
Other Covid indicators, such as the cumulative incidence rate and the number of active cases, are following suit, but the number of patients requiring hospitalisation in the Region are still increasing, with 21 people admitted into hospital in the past day.
Experts in Spain believe that the sixth wave could be nearing its end, but the country is a long way from being Covid-free as a new strain, dubbed “Stealth Omicron” has been detected in three autonomous communities.
New cases
The latest update details 3,391 cases in the past 24 hours, down from 4,434 on Wednesday, 4,952 on Tuesday and 5,193 on Monday.
Active cases
This is the ninth consecutive day of decreases for this Covid indicator and there are now 34,000 who currently have coronavirus in the Region; 969 fewer than the previous day.
Hospitalisations and recoveries
Worryingly, hospital admissions are not following the same trend as the positive diagnoses, and there are now 665 Covid patients in the Region’s hospitals, 21 more than the previous day and 35 more than a week ago. ICU patients have remained around the 80 mark this week and, after dropping by four since the last update, there are now 80 patients in intensive care.
On the other hand, some 4,357 people have recovered from Covid in the last day, making the total number of people to have overcome the virus 277,479.
Fatalities
A slightly lower number of deaths was reported in Friday’s update: three in 24 hours. The victims were all elderly males, aged 80, 89 and 97, and their deaths bring the total number of fatalities in the Region up to 1,958.
Incidence rate
Another large drop in the 14-day incidence rate has left the current figure at 4,467 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, down from 4,694.3 on Wednesday. The 7-day cumulative incidence rate has also dropped to 1,902,3; under the 2,000-mark for the first time since January 9, according to Murcia Salud.
Vaccines
Despite the fact that the majority of Spaniards think that Covid vaccines should be mandatory, there are still thousands of people in the Region of Murcia who have yet to get their jabs. Only 86.93% of the target population has had both doses while 99.35% has had at least one jab.
Booster jabs are available to everyone over the age of 18 in Murcia and appointments for first and third doses can be made online. Over 50s do not require a prior appointment and can simply turn up at their corresponding vaccine centre to get their top-up shot.
