Danger on Alicante's AP-7: British driver travels 17km the wrong way causing chaos
Despite flashing lights and warnings from Guardia Civil, a 76-year-old British driver forced others off the motorway before being intercepted
In a frightening incident reported yesterday about the night of October 18, a 76-year-old British man drove 17 kilometres the wrong way along the AP-7 motorway in Alicante, putting lives at serious risk. The Guardia Civil launched an immediate response after the vehicle was detected on cameras and multiple motorists called 112 emergency services to report the hazard.
Patrols from Torrevieja and Orihuela rapidly mobilised to intercept the vehicle. Despite repeated warnings using flashing lights, sirens, and loudspeakers, the man continued driving against traffic in the left lane, forcing several drivers to swerve to avoid head-on collisions.
The vehicle finally exited at junction 737 and was stopped on the CV-912 road. The driver is now under investigation for reckless driving under Article 380 of the Spanish Penal Code, facing charges related to endangering the lives and safety of other road users.
The Guardia Civil has issued a strong reminder about the importance of road safety, urging all drivers to pay close attention to signage, especially when entering or exiting highways, to prevent similar dangerous incidents from occurring.
