ARCHIVED - Date set for Shakira tax fraud trial in Spain
The Colombian pop star is facing more than 8 years in jail for defrauding the Spanish system
After almost a year of speculation, a trial date for singing sensation Shakira has been set for November 20 by the courts in Barcelona. The ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ star is facing eight years and two months behind bars and an eye-watering fine of 23.8 million euros for allegedly defrauding the Spanish tax agency to the tune of 14.5 million.
The sensational trial has been scheduled with 12 sessions and around 200 witnesses that will run through November and December, but there’s still time for Shakira to reach a plea deal with the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office if she admits she is guilty of fraud, something she has strenuously denied up to this point.
Spanish tax attorney Isaac Abad of Abad & Associates Lawyers and Accountants has stated that he believes they will eventually reach an agreement, and that Shakira could follow the footsteps of the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo by simply admitting guilt and paying back the money owed.
The pop star, whose real name is Isabel Mebarak Shakira, lived in Barcelona with her ex Gerard Pique between 2012 and 2014. While she allegedly paid more than 104 million euros in taxes abroad during this time, she didn’t contribute a cent in Spain and claims she didn’t become resident here until 2014.
Unfortunately for the Colombian star, credit card records and countless social media posts appear to prove otherwise.
In November last year, Shakira sensationally accused the Spanish Treasury of “using her” as part of a publicity stunt and “violating” her right to privacy. A few months earlier, she flatly refused an offer from the Prosecutor’s Office that would have reduced her sentence if convicted.
Shakira split from Piqué, who played football for Barcelona, Manchester United and Spain, in June 2022, right around the time the first allegations of fraud were made against her. She once again made headlines this January when she launched a scathing musical attack on her former partner. The collaboration with Argentinian producer Bizarrap, which garnered more than 63 million views on YouTube in just 24 hours, making it the most-watched new Latin song in the platform’s history.
