Dead body pulled from Orihuela Costa canal
The body, reportedly that of a cyclist, was found in the water close to Villamartín
The Guardia Civil is investigating the discovery of a dead body floating in the transfer canal that passes through Orihuela Costa. The grim sighting was reported at around 8.30am on Friday November 8, when a passer-by called the 112 emergency services.
Two teams of firefighters and police officers rushed to the site of the tragedy, which is located between the municipalities of Orihuela and San Miguel de Salinas, very close to the popular expat district of Villamartín.
Local reports suggest that the deceased was a cyclist as the victim was wearing sports clothes, although this, along with the cause of death, hasn’t been confirmed. It’s also not yet known if the victim is a man or a woman.
The canal connects the La Pedrera reservoir and Campo de Cartagena through the Orihuela and Pilar coastline for more than 60 kilometres, and it’s a very popular year-round route with walkers and bikers.
This service road was once also used by cars, although access to any vehicle other than the CHS maintenance crews is now prohibited.
