ARCHIVED - Decomposed body of a woman washes up on beach in Cartagena
The corpse was found on the shore in La Manga del Mar Menor, in the Region of Murcia
The body of a woman in an advanced state of decomposition has washed up in La Manga del Mar Menor, Cartagena, and police believe the corpse could have been in the water for months.
The grisly discovery was made at Galúa beach on Friday, when early bathers were taking a dip.
An investigation has been launched to try to identify the corpse, but reports suggest the deceased could have been aboard a small immigrant boat, known as a patera, attempting to make it to the Region of Murcia coastline.

Although a full identification has not yet been made, police are confident the body is that of a woman due to the underwear the deceased was wearing. And based on the "state of the body", the victim may have been missing at sea for "several months".
"The first hypotheses suggest that the woman could have been a passenger or crew member of a patera and, for unknown reasons, ended up dying at sea."
The body was taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) where a post mortem will be carried out to try to clarify the cause of death.
Over the last few weeks, numerous small boats have been intercepted by Maritme Services with dozens of immigrants on board, and in recent years there have been numerous fatalities after vessels have capsized trying to make the perilous journey to the region' coastline.
