Discount driving this summer as fuel prices drop by 25 euros
Petrol and diesel in Spain are both now cheaper than before the Ukraine war
There’s no better time to hit the open road than the summer and this year, happy campers should find they have a few more euros in their pockets for souvenirs since fuel prices have finally plummeted.
Both petrol and diesel marked a terrifying upward trajectory since the moment Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 and even the 20-cent discount applied by the Spanish government did little to alleviate the financial pinch.
But now, more than a year down the line, the prices have stabilised and a litre of petrol has dropped to around 1.59 euros, while diesel has bottomed out at 1.42 euros. The contrast with the dates surrounding the Russian invasion is striking: last February 24, the pumps in Spain were charging 1.60 euros for super 95, and the cost continued to skyrocket in the ensuing months to break all records at more than 2 euros per litre.
This very welcome decrease means that exploring Spain by car will be considerably cheaper this summer than last. Generally speaking, filling a 50-litre tank of a car with unleaded a year ago cost roughly 104 euros, but topping up that same tank today costs just 79 euros – that’s a saving of 25 quid in your pocket.
It’s a similar good news story with diesel: on June 6 of 2022, motorists were shelling out 97 euros at the pumps but this summer drivers will save 26 euros, spending 71 euros on an average fill.
Will the prices go up again?
The reality is that the sharp downward trajectory of both petrol and diesel has already slowed down, so if you’re running on fumes, now is definitely a good time to gas up. Many motorists make the mistake of waiting to fill the tank until right before a big trip, but studies show that fuel prices traditionally go up before long weekends and holidays.
