Disgraced ex-king of Spain set to move home after elections
Juan Carlos I is said to be considering a permanent return to Spain if the PP wins the general election
Former King of Spain Juan Carlos I is understood to be seriously considering returning to Spain after three years of self-imposed exile if the Partido Popular (PP) presidential candidate succeeds in ousting Pedro Sánchez on July 23.
PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who is widely expected to be elected as the new head of the government later this month, has previously stated that the disgraced former monarch is welcome to move home once his legal issues are resolved.
“The PP is a constitutional party and we have the utmost respect for the monarchy, key to our democratic system,” he said.
“The King Emeritus has been a key figure in our history, he has no pending cases and any decision on his personal sphere corresponds to him and the royal household.”
Now, according to sources close to the ex-king, Juan Carlos is not only returning to Spain to compete in a July sailing regatta but is readying himself to settle in his former residence, the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid.
The controversial public figure sensationally abdicated the throne in 2014 amid several corruption allegations and fled Spain for the United Arab Emirates in 2020. But since then, he has been the subject of multiple investigations into tax offences and has even been hauled through the courts in the UK on harassment charges.
However, after almost two years of investigation, all irregularities discovered were dismissed without legal consequences.
For now, all that has been confirmed is the ex-king’s visit to Sanxenxo in Galicia at the end of July to take part in a sailing competition aboard the Bribon. As on his previous two trips to Spain, Juan Carlos is expected to fly directly from Abu Dhabi in a private plane belonging to the royal family of the United Arab Emirates.
