Driving with interior lights on: A costly misstep for Spanish drivers
Misuse of the car's lighting system is punishable by a fine ranging from 80 to 200 euros in Spain
Generally speaking, motorists in Spain are hyper-aware of the state of the lights on their cars, as blown headlamp, indicator or brake light bulbs can lead to expensive fines. But there is another culprit that could land drivers in hot water with the traffic police: the interior light.
Often referred to as the cabin or dome lights, most of us have not-so-fond memories of being scolded by our parents for fiddling with these while the car was in motion. Not only is this a distraction for the person driving, but the brightness can dazzle other motorists.
But the question is, can the traffic police penalise us?
There is no article in the General Traffic Regulations that expressly prohibits driving a car with the cabin lights on, although the rules do state that misuse of the vehicle's lighting system can be the subject of a traffic fine. In light of this, it is very important to know when it is permitted to drive with such lighting on.
Essentially, police officers will have to make a call depending on the individual situation, but they certainly will issue fines if they think having the light on could pose a risk to other road users.
Therefore, it’s really important to be careful if using the interior lights while driving, especially at night.
How much could drivers be fined?
Misuse of the car's lighting system is punishable by a fine ranging from 80 to 200 euros, so it's no small matter. The conclusion from the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) is that interior lights should only be used when strictly necessary, such as when you have to look for something essential in the vehicle (and obviously when you're not driving the car).
Although this situation is not included in the General Traffic Regulations, it is very likely that anyone who has them on will receive a fine.
