Drunk Irish passengers cause chaos on flight to Spain
The Ryanair flight from Dublin had to be diverted to Mallorca
Four Irish tourists have had their Spanish holiday cut very short after they were arrested before ever reaching their destination. The Ryanair flight, heading from Dublin to the party hotspot of Ibiza, was instead hastily landed in Palma de Mallorca so the four intoxicated men could be hauled off by island police.
Mallorca authorities later confirmed that the rowdy foursome were expelled from the flight and face expensive fines for breaking airline security rules.
The flight was originally scheduled to land in Ibiza at around noon on Saturday April 27 but the other passengers on board didn’t reach their destination until after 3pm. It’s understood that the four rowdy youngsters were forced to make their own way from Mallorca after being turfed off the plane.
A Guardia Civil spokesperson said: “Officers were asked to meet a plane heading from Dublin to Ibiza that had been diverted to Palma.
“Four Irish passengers on board the plane were removed and identified.”
A well-placed source added: “They were drinking alcohol they had bought before boarding the plane on board and causing problems on board by failing to follow instructions from the flight crew.”
Ryanair has been very clear that while passengers are free to carry any duty-free alcohol they’re purchased at the airport on board their planes, it absolutely can’t be consumed and must remain sealed for the duration of the flight.
In a similar incident last month, a reportedly disruptive British passenger was marched off a Ryanair flight by police after he downed a bottle of Disaronno that he bought in the duty free. The Manchester to Alicante flight was diverted to Barcelona so he could be removed.
In Spain, fines for this kind of behaviour can range anywhere from 58 euros to a whopping 47,000 euros. In addition, offenders can face a flying ban and could also be stung with the cost of the diversion.
