ARCHIVED - easyJet passenger arrested for smoking in toilet on UK flight to Alicante, Spain
The man was met by Spanish police when the Belfast flight arrived at Alicante-Elche Airport
A passenger on an easyJet flight from Belfast to Alicante, Spain, was arrested after reportedly being caught red-handed 'smoking in the toilets' and setting off the smoke alarm on board the aircraft.
Spanish police met the male passenger when the 4.15pm flight EZY6703 arrived at Alicante-Elche Airport on Sunday evening, July 10, after he were found to be causing a disruption.
An easyJet spokesperson said on Monday July 11: “We can confirm that flight EZY6703 from Belfast to Alicante yesterday was met by police on arrival in Alicante due to a passenger behaving disruptively.
“easyJet’s cabin crew are trained to assess and evaluate all situations and to act quickly and appropriately to ensure that the safety of the flight and other passengers is not compromised at any time.
“Whilst such incidents are rare we take them very seriously because the safety and wellbeing of passengers and crew is always easyJet's priority.”
According to another passenger, the man was caught smoking in the toilet after the alarm went off and cabin crew acted immediately. The passenger was apparently calm when confronted by cabin staff and the captain informed other holidaymakers what had happened, but according to the airline he later became aggressive.
Last week, an 18-year-old was arrested after posting on social media that an explosive device had been placed on a plane travelling from London Gatwick to Menorca which was subsequently intercepted by a fighter jet.
