ARCHIVED - Insurance fraud rife in Murcia
Fake car insurance claims are on the up all over Spain
A report just published by Spain’s insurance companies reveals that the number of cases of attempted insurance fraud detected in 2013 was 151,995, 3.7% more than in 2012, and that 5,528 of the fraudulent claims were made in the Region of Murcia.
Around 80% of fake claims in the Region (4,348) were related to vehicle insurance policies, and it seems that the prevalence of these claims continues to increase both in Spain and across Europe.Especially prone to this kind of fraud is the region of Andalucía, which accounted for over 22% of all fraudulent claims in Spain (34,587), while the numbers were also high in the Comunitat Valenciana (16,425), Galicia (8,785), Castilla y León (6,723) and Castilla-La Mancha (6,149).
The report also states that claims were made for a total of 573 million euros in Spain last year, but that insurance companies ended up paying out only 161 million, which corresponds to the “real amount” which was due to clients in respect of claims made.
The statistics released show that over 108,000 of the fraudulent claims detected (72%) were on vehicle insurance policies, with most of the rest being accounted for by the category named “others”, which includes home insurance.
