ARCHIVED - Elderly and vulnerable to receive Covid booster before youngsters in Spain
Spain has insisted on rolling out the third vaccination in order of age rather than offering it to the entire population
Spain has decided to go against the vaccination strategy adopted by much of Europe by insisting that older populations and the most vulnerable will be offered a booster dose before the third dose is rolled out to younger people. Many European nations are now vaccinating citizens as young as 40, and Spain will soon begin inoculating those aged between 5 and 12.
The original vaccination campaign, which began with the elderly living in nursing homes, was harshly criticised by younger generations, particularly in the summer months, when their unvaccinated status affected their ability to travel abroad.
Despite this, the Ministry of Health has insisted that “we know what works” and that the strategy of protecting the most vulnerable first has “put Spain in the lead” of the vaccination process in the EU and the rest of the world.
Spain began by administering the booster dose to people living in elderly residences and people who are medically vulnerable, such as those who have had transplants or are undergoing treatment for cancer. Unlike the first vaccination campaign, health personnel were not given priority this time around, but instead were offered the third jab when those aged 60 and over began receiving it.
It is likely that Spain will eventually re-vaccinated the entire population, as the European Council is set to meet on December 16 and 17 to make a decision of placing a nine-month expiry date on Covid passports. This would mean that anyone who hasn’t received the booster jab within nine months of receiving their second dose will need to provide a Covid test or proof of having recovered from coronavirus in order to travel.
The European Commission initially wanted to introduce the expiration date process from January 10, but it is now understood that this will be extended to allow time for all Spanish adults to receive the third vaccination dose.
