ARCHIVED - Major confusion in Spain over the vaccination of children
Most communities in Spain still don’t know when the doses will arrive, or how to prioritise children for the jab
Since the European Commission announced that it was authorising the vaccination of children between the ages of 5 and 11 against coronavirus, many communities in Spain have begun making preparations for rolling out the jabs before Christmas. In light of the emergence of the Omicron variant, and the fact that youngsters now have the highest cumulative incidence rate in the country, time would appear to be of the essence, but most regions are still deeply confused about the process.
It has been confirmed that the Pfizer jab, at a third of the adult dosage, will be distributed throughout the EU from December 13, but with 3.2 million children in the age group, Spain will require more than six million doses to double vaccinate the younger population.
The Ministry of Health has not specified if certain children should be prioritised, nor whether the vaccine should be administered from oldest to youngest, or vice versa, but paediatrician Dr. Jesús Ruiz Contreras, a member of the CAV-AEP, has suggested that minors with complex diseases, such as cancer and congenital heart disease should be immunised first, regardless of their age.
The expert has reassured parents that the chance of children aged between 5 and 11 experiencing side effects is “extremely low” and he is encouraging those with youngsters to avail themselves of the vaccine, since allowing Covid to circulate among this age group creates “more possibilities that new variants will appear and that the disease will be transmitted to people most vulnerable”.
Andalucía expects to receive 200,000 child-friendly doses in mid-December and will endeavour to vaccinate as many children as possible before schools breaks up for Christmas, while Madrid has already announced that it will begin rolling out the jab to minors on December 15.
