ARCHIVED - Electricity in Spain hits second highest February price ever
Energy bills in Spain were 36% higher last month than in January
Spain is currently enduring the chilliest spell of the winter so far but those with electric heating will be feeling the pinch as well as the cold, since energy bills have risen once more, this time to the second highest February figure ever seen.
The average household will have paid around 91.61 euros for their electricity bill last month compared to 67.20 in January, which is a crushing 36.3% increase. However, this is still far from the lofty heights reached a year ago, when those on the semi-regulated tariff (PVPC) forked out a frightening 131.29 euros.
This increase in February electricity costs, according to the experts, was caused mainly by lower renewable production (wind and hydro) in Spain compared to January, which led to a surge in the use of gas; this in turn hikes up electricity prices in the wholesale market.
Very bad news for the consumer, since core inflation also ramped up considerably last month, with some of the most common food items now more expensive than ever.
Consumer organisation Facua has called on the Spanish government to go beyond remedying the “disproportionate benefits of large electric companies” by throwing its energy behind promoting the social bonus, which is a system of aid for low-income families to help with expensive bills.
The group has also recommended a campaign to educate consumers about their electricity bills and to advise them on how to optimise energy use in their homes. According to Facua, Spanish customers pay electric companies close to a billion euros more a year for the excess kilowatts used over their contracted allowance, a fortune that could be saved if people better understood the tariffs.
