ARCHIVED - Eleven immigrants rescued off Alicante coast
The irregular immigrants were spotted by a surveillance plane almost 50km from the Alicante coastline on the Costa Blanca
As desperate attempts to reach the Alicante coast continue, Maritime Services rescued 11 irregular migrants who were travelling aboard a patera (in Spanish, a small boat) on Sunday November 21.
The patera was spotted 48km southeast of Alicante by a surveillance plane flying over the area, and rescuers discovered 10 males, two under the age of 16, and one female aboard.
All of the occupants are said to be in "good health", although the woman showed symptoms of hyperglycaemia and was treated by a doctor at Alicante port, where the Red Cross (Cruz Roja) carried out PCR tests on all of the 11 irregular immigrants to rule out any cases of Covid.
Last month, the authorities reported that some 540 people tried to make their way illegally to the coasts of Valencia region, Murcia and Andalucía within a 24-hour period, with several children and pregnant women amongst those aboard dozens of small boats.
