Espacio Mediterráneo has activities all this month for International Water Day
Young people and families are encouraged to join in the sustainability and environmental workshops this March
Since March is the month of Sustainability and the Environment, and on the occasion of the International Water Day celebrated on March 22,
Espacio Mediterráneo shopping centre in Cartagena has launched, from the 14th to the 30th of this month, the event ‘
El Camino del Agua’. The main aim of this initiative is to raise awareness about the importance of water as a source of life, wealth and energy and, at the same time, as a limited resource that must be taken care of.
A playful learning space has been installed in the shopping centre where young people can learn about the journey that water takes from the mountains to the sea, through a circuit of games and interactive experiences. The journey begins at the top of a mountain, where the rain falls, filling the children’s backpacks with drops of water in the form of blue balls. Along the way, the children take their drops of water through the different stages of the water cycle and learning that it is a limited resource that can become scarce up if it is misused. By watering a vegetable patch, giving animals a drink, filling up the washing machine, running a factory and taking a shower, the little ones can play and learn together with their parents about water usage.

In addition, Espacio Mediterráneo is running family workshops on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 5pm to 7pm to create flamingos out of coloured salt in recognition of the Cartagena salt flats. There is also a workshop to make a homemade water purifier with natural filters to separate the different waste products from the water until it is transparent and suitable for reuse. And then there is a waterwheel where young and old discover how water is used to generate energy.
Finally, there is a workshop for all ages from the staff of the Southeast Naturalists Association (ANSE) about the Marchamalo Salt Flats to discover the process of creating salt, its different states and the formation of crystals. Attendees will be able to see the different salinity of the different types of salt, its qualities, and learn the importance of salt and its uses in the evolution of society.
Espacio Mediterráneo is a Committed and Sustainable Space that carries out Environmental, Social and Governance actions throughout the year in line with the 2030 Agenda to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The water activities and events held at Espacio Mediterráneo this March specifically meet five SDGs: 4 Quality Education - 6 Clean Water and Sanitation - 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities - 12 Responsible Production and Consumption - 15 Life of Terrestrial Ecosystems’. In this way, Espacio Mediterráneo is working for a better world “where every drop counts”.
