Estacio Bridge in La Manga breaks down yet again
The latest failure comes after a summer of repeated problems with the bridge

La Manga's Estacio Bridge has broken down yet again, staying closed on Sunday October 11 after a fault in its opening mechanism forced all the scheduled openings to be cancelled.
According to the San Javier Civil Protection agency, technicians have been working to track down the problem and get the bridge running normally again as quickly as they can. There's no estimate yet for when that might be, and the agency admitted it couldn't guarantee the next scheduled openings. The Emergency Services unit also apologised for the inconvenience.
This is the latest in a run of failures, as the bridge has broken down as many as three times this summer, including twice in August, which interrupted maritime traffic in the area.
The problems have put the idea of replacing the bridge with a tunnel under the Estacio channel firmly back on the agenda. San Javier Council commissioned a preliminary study into a submerged tunnel back in 2019, and the project was costed at around €10.3 million at the time, although the price tag is now expected to be closer to €12 million.
The plan has won fresh backing from several local groups, with six associations recently signing a letter calling for the tunnel to be built as soon as possible.
