ARCHIVED - EU invests nearly 40 million euros to bring better, faster rail services to Aguilas
It is hoped that work to update the train line will commence later this year

Spain’s Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda has announced that it will undertake significant work to update the rail network in Águilas, Murcia to connect to the high-speed line and reduce the journey time to Murcia city by 30 minutes.
The announcement was published yesterday in the Official Journal of the European Union and detailed a budget of 39.6 million euros for the forthcoming Águilas branch line connection to the high-speed network, which will allow, among other things, to adapt the existing track to standard international gauge.
The mayor of Águilas, Mari Carmen Moreno, has described the news as “very positive”.
“This is another step forward in the goal we all pursue, which is none other than to have a modern and adequate train service,” she said. “The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda will carry out a major investment to transform the track to international gauge, an unprecedented work that will mean, under the new Suburban Network, that the journey from Águilas to Murcia will be 30 minutes faster than now, through the electrification and the implementation of new trains that are already being manufactured.”
It is likely that the official tender process for awarding the remodelling works will take place next June, so that the winning company can start drawing up plans to begin work this year.
