ARCHIVED - Farm worker in Los Belones collapses with heatstroke as summer weather arrives in Murcia

As the summer kicks in and the heat begins to become oppressive during the middle of the day throughout the Region of Murcia one of the first cases of severe heatstroke of 2021 has been reported in the municipality of Cartagena, where an agricultural worker in Los Belones, close to the southern end of the Mar Menor, had to be taken to hospital on Saturday after collapsing in the fields.
The incident was reported to the 112 emergency services line just before 14.00 when the man lost consciousness while working close to kilometre 8 on the RM-314 road between La Manga Club and Los Belones. His symptoms included a high temperature, profuse sweating and vomiting, and an ambulance was dispatched to the scene immediately.
The victim was taken to the Hospital Santa Lucía on the eastern outskirts of Cartagena for treatment, and with temperatures forecast to reach well into the 30s throughout the Region this week all members of the public are advised to avoid the midday sun and drink plenty of water.
