February 11 Cycling Tour of Murcia with a 195-kilometre route from San Javier to Cartagena
Mountain climbs in Sierra Espuña and La Azohía and sprint bonuses in Mazarrón, Alhama and Murcia
The 43rd edition of cycling’s Tour of Murcia takes place on Saturday February 11, with a single day’s racing taking riders on a 194.7-kilometre route which begins on the shore of the Mar Menor in San Javier and ends in the city of Cartagena.
The event begins at 12.40 just outside Hortamira in El Mirador (San Javier) and then takes participants to the city of Murcia before heading south-west to Alhama de Murcia. There is then a Category 1 climb in the mountains of Sierra Espuña, follwed by a speedy descent to Totan and Mazarrón, where a sprint takes place in Avenida de la Constitución between 16.25 and 16.50.
The route then follows the bay and heads towards Cartagena via the Cuestas del Cedacero, a third category climb, before ending next to the Parque Torres in Cartagena at approximately 17.30.
23 teams have confirmed their participation in the event, 9 of them belonging to the elite World Team category, and among the 161 riders will be Luis León Sánchez, who won the race in 2018 and 2019, and the 2021 champion Antonio Jesús Soto.
It goes without saying that roads will be closed at various locations during the day to make way for the peloton.
