ARCHIVED - Final week of Ryanair strikes begins in Spain with 11 cancellations
Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca have been hit with the most axed flights
The final week of the scheduled Ryanair cabin crew strikes in Spain has begun, running from Monday July 25 until Thursday July 28 and on the first day, 11 flights were cancelled in all, while another 227 experienced delays.
As has been the trend since the industrial action began, Barcelona has been the hardest hit airport, accounting for nine of the suspended flights, followed by Palma de Mallorca.
With regard to delays, Mallorca has born the brunt this Monday with 52, followed by Barcelona (43), Malaga (37), Madrid (19), Alicante and Santiago de Compostela (18), Seville (14), Ibiza (11), Girona (8) and Valencia (7).
Ryanair has remained steadfast in its claims that the strikes are only directly affecting a tiny percentage of flights, instead blaming the Europe-wide suspensions and delays on problems with “air traffic controllers and ground staff.”
Nevertheless, the general secretary of the USO union, Lidia Arranz, has confirmed that around 300 routes have been axed since the work stoppages began, “despite efforts of the airline to manipulate the minimum services which are abusive.”
The airline has come under fire from unions for branding all of their flights as essential, which forces the crew to report to work or face possible dismissal. Ryanair has also drafted in staff from the UK and Morocco to cover the shortfall and minimise the disruption caused by the ongoing industrial action.
So far, 10 cabin crew in Spain have been sacked, the most recent of which occurred in Malaga, although the unions have launched legal action to reinstate them.
