ARCHIVED - Fines of up to 50k for drunk and disorderly Brits visiting Spanish Islands
Boozed-up Britons visiting Spain will be heavily penalised for antisocial behaviour
British holidaymakers have been dealt yet another blow as both Spanish and UK authorities have warned that boozed up tourists could be slapped with fines of up to £50,000 (60,000 euros) for drunk and disorderly behaviour on the Balearic Islands of Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca, which introduced new alcohol laws in 2020.
Just last week, EasyJet issued a caution to its customers hoping for a drink-fuelled get-away as several all-inclusive resorts are reportedly limiting Brits to a maximum of six drinks throughout the day – three at lunch and three at dinner.
Now, as Brits prepare to flock to Spain for the spring and summer seasons, the Balearic Island’s Minister for Tourism, Iago Negueruela and the UK’s Ambassador to Spain, Hugh Elliott, are upping the ante to ensure that the alcohol laws are followed and strictly enforced.
A government spokesperson said that: “Efforts to promote the destination, provide it with better quality through public and private sector investment and position it in an increasingly competitive and global market, have recently been affected by some uncivil behaviours.”
He added that the majority of antisocial behaviour experienced in tourist hotspots such as Mallorca and Ibiza are related to alcohol abuse, while Negueruela insisted that the islands are now opting for “quality over quantity” when it comes to holidaymakers.
As part of the crackdown on boozy breaks, drunk tourists found climbing between balconies in their hotels and people advertising party boats could face fines of up to 60,000 euros, and happy hour deals and two-for-one drinks offers have been banned. In addition, alcohol can’t be sold in shops between 9.30pm and 8am.
