ARCHIVED - Five arrested for stealing cash and phones on El Postiguet beach in Alicante
Officers responded to two different incidents and arrested five people in total for stealing mobile phones and cash
Officers from the Beach Unit of the Policía Local in Alicante have detained five people aged between 17 and 34 for stealing mobile phones and money from bathers who were swimming in the sea at the El Postiguet beach in Alicante city.
The police were called to the beach at around 2.30 pm last Monday after being alerted by a lifeguard who had caught a man stealing various objects.
In addition, officers were also given a detailed description of three other thieves, who attempted to get away from the police. However, the officers managed to locate and detain them: two men were arrested close to the TRAM and another was detained in a nearby residential urbanization.
Around two hours later, at around 4.20 pm on Monday afternoon, the Policía Local received another phone call about a fight on the promenade on El Postiguet beach.
Once the officers separated those involved in the fight, one of the men reported that he was asleep on the beach when he was woken up and told that two individuals had stolen his mobile phone and a wallet containing cash, which had caused the fight between the alleged thief and his victim.
The police were able to return the mobile phone to the man, as well as 255 euros, which they found nearby hidden in a plant.
In total 5 people were arrested for theft, three men, aged 24, 26 and 34, and two more people who were underage and of Spanish nationality.
