Five white storks electrocuted on Murcia power lines
Around 50 of these beautiful birds have met a similar fate in the Region of Murcia in the last decade
At least five white storks were killed instantly on Friday August 2 when they landed on a power line near Calasparra in northern Murcia. According to the ANSE wildlife naturalist association, the electrocuted birds were members of a flock that was migrating to Africa.
Once the bodies of the dead birds were removed, the association lodged a complaint against the supply company. According to the group, this particular power line is “highly dangerous” as a large part of the crossbar isn’t insulated, meaning that it’s always live.
“This makes electrocution particularly likely,” the organisation explained in a statement, adding that in the last decade alone, nearly 50 storks have been electrocuted in the Region of Murcia.
The nature association also reported that a few kilometres away and outside the protected area, a Bonelli's eagle had recently died from electrocution.
ANSE is therefore calling on electricity companies to address the correction of their power lines in an “effective manner” to avoid these horrible deaths in the future. The group has also asked the regional government to be more proactive in finding a “definitive solution” to this problem, which needlessly kills so much vulnerable wildlife.
