ARCHIVED - Floody hell: dramatic car rescue at the height of Alicante storms
The Costa Blanca motorist was stranded in water that had flooded up to her waist
The entire Alicante coastline is labouring under a yellow weather warning for torrential storms as the weekend approaches, with up to 60 litres of rain per square metre expected to fall in just one hour.
It’s often heard that Spain isn’t built for the rain, and driving can become especially treacherous during downpours, which one unfortunate Costa Blanca motorist learned first hand on Friday November 11.
Ahead of the winter season, which meteorologists are already predicting will be wetter than usual, the DGT issued a series of warnings against trying your luck on flooded roads. Their advice was to follow an alternative route whenever possible, of course, and that under no circumstances should drivers attempt to traverse a body of water unless they’re certain of its depth – it takes a surprisingly low level of standing water to swamp the average car.
Campoamor on Alicante’s coast is a notorious flood plain, and residents have been campaigning for years for improvements to the infrastructure, which overflows each year, dragging away walkways and beach furniture. The fix hasn’t happened quickly enough for one driver, who was found trapped in her car near the beach, with icy water swirling up to her waist.Luckily though, members of the Local Police force were quickly on hand and rescued the stranded motorist who, aside from getting pretty wet, was otherwise unharmed.
“If there’s a stream or large amount of water and you can’t see the bottom, stop and turn around,” officers warned after the dramatic rescue.
