ARCHIVED - Forest fires in Spain claim their second victim, and continue to burn out of control
More than 25,000 hectares of land have burned across Spain in the worst summer for wildfires in 10 years
The heatwave in Spain, which began on July 10, has resulted in devastating forest fires that have ravaged the countryside, with moderate wind and temperatures above 40ºC fanning the flames across the country.
A second fatality has been reported over the weekend as a result of the blazes, that of a local man in Escober de Tábara in Zamora. Just a couple of days ago the wildfires also claimed the life of a firefighter in Losacio in the same area.
So far, more than 25,000 hectares of land have been torched as the fires run on seemingly unstoppable, and while the official heatwave is set to come to an end at the start of the week, Spain is still in for several more days of “abnormally high” temperatures.
On Monday July 18, the fires tearing through Castilla y León, Catalonia and Galicia continue to be a cause for concern, although the blaze in Extremadura, one of the worst affected by the July heatwave, has improved markedly in recent hours.
Likewise in Andalucia, the fire of the Sierra de Mijas is now considered to be under control.
All trains from Madrid to Galicia this Monday have been cancelled as a result of the fires, after Renfe passengers en route to Ferrol, A Coruña were frightened by the sight of flames mere metres away from their train carriage:
