ARCHIVED - France closes its borders to UK tourists
Only those with compelling reasons will be permitted entry
In an effort to shield itself from the expansion of the Omicron variant, France announced on Thursday December 16 that it will close its borders to UK tourists, regardless of whether they are vaccinated or not. The decision comes as Britain registered the highest number of daily infections since the beginning of the pandemic – 78,610 cases.
As of Saturday December 18, all holiday and business trips from the UK will be prohibited and only those with compelling work, family or medical reasons will be permitted entry to France.
These travellers will have to undergo a negative antigen or PCR test 24 hours before arrival, even if they are double jabbed. Another exception applies to French citizens or residents and their families who live in Britain but want to return to France; they will have to remain in isolation upon arrival until they obtain a negative test within 48 hours after setting foot on French soil.
Speaking to BFM television about the decision, government spokesperson Gabriel Attal confirmed that “tourism and business trips for people who do not have French or European nationality or are residents will be limited”.
