ARCHIVED - France to require Covid test from last 24 hours for UK travellers
As yet, British travellers driving across the France-Spain border won’t be subject to the same restrictions
France announced today, Thursday December 16, that is is tightening its Covid-19 restrictions for travellers entering the country from the UK, in an attempt to stop the spread of the Omicron variant. The new measures being put in place will come into force at 12am on Saturday December 18 and will require all UK arrivals to provide a negative Covid test taken less than 24 hours before their entry into France, regardless of whether or not they have been vaccinated.
Those who are fully vaccinated and travel from the UK to Spain currently have to provide a Covid passport with proof of vaccination and a negative Covid test from 48 hours before arrival, but as yet there is no indication that people coming from the UK and driving through France to Spain will also be required to give a PCR or rapid test less than 24 hours old.
The UK currently has many more cases of Omicron than France, and so travellers from there to France will also have and isolate for a week after arrival, though this can be reduced to two days if they take another test and are negative.
There were 78,610 new Covid cases in the UK yesterday, Wednesday December 15, which is the highest daily number reported since the pandemic started, and just over 10,000 of those were confirmed as Omicron cases, though it could be as high as double that. To put that into perspective, France had 65,713 new Covid cases but only 240 confirmed cases of Omicron.
As European countries change their travel restriction rules on a daily basis, however, the rules for tourists coming to Spain from elsewhere on the continent could be liable to change at any moment. For instance, Spain has recently made it obligatory for travellers from Ireland to be fully vaccinated before they can enter the country.
Spanish hotels and businesses have in fact complained of a spate of cancellations from British tourists this winter, mainly due to Covid rules.
