ARCHIVED - Spanish hotel sector hit by wave of cancellations by British tourists
Alicante, Murcia and the Balearic Islands have all been affected by the travel restrictions for Brits
The tourism sector in Spain, which looked to finally be recovering slightly after the height of the coronavirus pandemic, suffered another blow two weeks ago when the authorities announced that British tourists over the age of 12 must be double-jabbed to enter the country.
This threw a spanner in the works for many British families planning a trip to sunny Spain, as the United Kingdom has a different vaccination rhythm to most European countries and many minors have only had their first jab.
Spanish hoteliers were badly affected by this rule, and the Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation (Cehat) revealed that they registered a 60% decrease in reservations in just one week, leaving the sector reeling at what they see as unfair and “incoherent” measures.
The president of Cehat, Jorge Marichel, expressed his frustrations in a statement: “We do not understand these inconsistent measures that seriously harm a sector that has had an exemplary attitude and constant cooperation throughout the pandemic”. Mentioning that the hotel sector was one of the first industries to accept the requirement of Covid passports in their establishments, as well as accepting the government’s decision to close all tourist accommodations for several months during the pandemic.
“We do not understand why common sense is not applied and the same protocols are established for all children and families who wish to travel to our country this Christmas”, added Mr Marichel.
The worst affected areas in Spain are those along the Mediterranean coast, such as the Region of Murcia, the Balearic Islands and the Comunidad Valenciana, especially Benidorm, as the popular tourist destination is normally frequented all year round by Brits.
